Fri 10 – Sun 12 Feb. The Great Hurdy-Gurdy Weekend with Nigel Eaton, Patrick Bouffard and Cliff Stapleton. Workshop weekend for intermediate and advanced players with 3 of the best players in the world. Saturday night concert with special guests Stephen Tyler and the Daughters of Elvin. Sun 12 – Wed 15 Feb. Traditional storytelling course : A Place for Stories with Sharon Jacksties. A course for newcomers to traditional storytelling and for those with some experience who want to explore how to give their telling a sense of place. An opportunity to discover and develop practical telling skills in the context of Somerset's unique landscapes. These transferable skills will also enable the teller to bring other story settings to life. Sharon Jacksties has been a professional storyteller for over 20 years, with extensive experience of teaching storytelling here and abroad. She has a growing interest in how stories are related to particular places, and her book of Somerset Stories is soon to be published by The History Press. Fri 16 – Sun 18 Mar. Community Choir Weekend with Sandra Kerr and Werca's Folk. Sandra Kerr is widely experienced as a community choir leader and arranger of traditional songs and contemporary folk, and for her enthusiasm and skill in working with people of all ages and abilities. Her award-winning women’s choir, specialising in Northumbrian traditional songs, is immensely popular in the North East. She has also directed the Sidmouth Folk Festival choir for over a decade, and worked, to great acclaim, at Anna Tabbush’s SongFest. The programme will include energising warm ups each morning, a variety of song material, from simple rounds and chants, to traditional folk and contemporary songs, mouth music and repertoire from Europe and Africa. Mon 19 – Fri 23 Mar. Traditional Storytellers and musicians course : The Music of Story with Sharon Jacksties. A course for traditional storytellers and musicians who want to explore how to incorporate story and music in performance. Participants will be given the opportunity to collaborate and work with their less familiar art form. One of the aims is to explore how to integrate narrative and musical material. Sharon Jacksties has been a professional storyteller for over 20 years. Her storytelling and music duo, 'Stranger than Fiction' has performed at the National Theatre and at storytelling venues all over the country and 'Music Box' has been running story and music projects for children for 12 years. The course will be co-led by at least one professional musician with extensive experience of working with storytellers. Mon 2 – Fri 6 Apr. HOT HOUSE. Residential workshop week for young gifted and talented musicians, dancers and artists from the South West culminating in a premier performance at Halsway Manor's first youth folk music and arts festival on Saturday 7thApril (see below). Led by Will Lang and a group of young tutors/collaborators, the focus of the week will be to bring together young people who are yet to discover the folk arts, to compose and choreograph new works/rework traditional material, based on a chosen folklorist/regional tradition. Arrive 12noon Monday. Meals, accommodation (5 nights) and tuition £170.

 

Thur 5 Apr. 8pm. Concert with James Findlay. An evening with James Findlay and guests exploring local songs from the socialist priest and folk song collector Charles Marson and his partnership with Cecil Sharp. Stories from David Sutcliffe author of 'Keys to Heaven' the biography of Charles Marson. James Findlay – singer, guitarist and fiddle player –is an exciting young musician who explores the English folk tradition. He walked away with the BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Award title and was a winner in the ‘New Roots’ national competition for up-and-coming folk performers in 2008. £10. 16 yrs and under accompanied by an adult £4.

 

Sat 7 Apr. SOMERFEST. Jim Moray, James Findlay, 4Square, Dyer:Cummings, Will Lang, Songs from the Shed and many more. A one day folk music and arts festival created by and for young people which focuses on all aspects of our folk traditions. There will be opportunities for Performance, Participation and Backstage work experience by shadowing industry production professionals through the event and a chance to film, record, interview and network by creating Halsway Manor's own Music, Video, Audio and Blogging channel broadcast on the internet. Artistic Director – Will Lang. Gigs, silent disco/ceilidh, open mike stage, films, crafts, great food, non alcoholic cocktail lounge and much more. £20. Please note there is no overnight camping available on site.

 

Sun 8 – Fri 13 Apr. Halsway Manor Easter House Party and Holiday with Ted & Pat Morse, and Chris, Julie & Nick Dewhurst (3D). An Easter party dance followed by a packed programme including Country Capers, a Costumed Ball, a ‘Halsway Whodunnit?’ led by Inspector (Ted) Morse, rambling in the Quantocks, dance workshops in a variety of styles, music workshops for all instruments. Plenty of opportunities to try something new – maypole dancing, sword dancing, handbell ringing, calling a dance, joining a music or singing group, and more besides – and all in the friendly and relaxed atmosphere for which Halsway is so well-known. Fri 27 – Mon 30 Apr. Violin Making Course with Neville Gardner. Neville Gardner has been teaching violin making for 15 years. This popular course ensures all participants get the maximum amount of time at the workbench. Beginners are also welcome. As well as the violin family support can be given for making a Rebec (medieval ancestor of the violin). The class size is limited so that participants have plenty of tutor support. Come and celebrate the 150th anniversary of the West Somerset Railway (which runs nearby) with a weekend of West Somerset traditional music, dancing and stories at Halsway Manor and trips on the wonderful steam railway. Return of this popular event for those who enjoy walking in this beautiful area and folk dancing in the evenings. There are three levels of walk to choose from each day 9 - 11 miles, 5 – 7 miles and 2 – 3 miles. During the week there is a coach trip out to walk on Exmoor. Full Board / en-suite - £316. Fri 25 – Sun 27 May. John Kirkpatrick’s British Button Box Workshop Weekend. Residential workshop weekend for players of the three-row button accordion - the quirky instrument popularised by Jimmy Shand. The weekend is very instrument specific, and will not be suitable for melodeons, nor for players of the two-row Irish style of accordion. But there will be sessions on the accordion's left hand, so players of other styles of accordion can be included. John will be starting out from his very firm base in traditional English folk music, covering Morris tunes, country dance tunes and folk songs, while also looking at the complexities of playing in all the keys available on this gloriously compact instrument, and exploring swathes of repertoire that may not be immediately associated with the poor old push-pull squeeze-box! Whether you've been playing five minutes or fifty years, this is a great opportunity to come and learn at the feet of one of England's most dedicated and respected folk musicians. Fri 20 – Sun 22 Jul. The Playford Liberation Front with Paul Hutchinson, Becky Price, Boldwood and some exciting special guest dance teachers. This is a new event for musicians and dancers who want to discover the treasure trove of music and dances published by John Playford in the English Dancing Master in 1651. This is about discovery and experimentation and is aimed largely at musicians and dancers who have little or even no previous experience with this material. Music workshops will include interpreting the music in different, exciting and danceable ways and working effectively with dance teachers and dancers. For dancers there will be lots of opportunities to learn dances and work with, and give feedback to, the musicians about what makes these dances really take off. Fri 27 – Sun 29 Jul. A Roodman Collection. A weekend of dancing led by John and Hilary Turner and guests musicians celebrating the dances devised by American choreographer Gary Roodman. The weekend programme will sample dances from the whole collection in a variety of styles, with some free time to explore the delights of West Somerset and the Quantock Hills. More details soon.

Mon 30 Jul – Fri 3 Aug. Young Folk Musicians Course. A five-day music residential course for 14-20 year olds, culminating in a performance at Sidmouth Folk Week. Led by Will Lang and a group of exciting young tutors who are all practicing artists and teachers. A full-on week of learning, practicing and performance, this is a really exciting opportunity for young people to increase their musical and performance skills. More details soon.

A fun week of Playford and Playford style folk dancing, singing and playing with callers Margaret Thomas & Robert Wright, musicians 'Merry Conceit' - Peter & Susan Swann, singing workshops - Julie Kimber-Nickelson. For those bringing an instrument, musicians' workshops can be arranged. On most afternoons there will be walks or strolls and even some Maypole dancing.

 

Mon 13– Fri 17 Aug. Creative Writing and Narrative Arts Summer School – storytelling course with Shonaleigh and Simon Heywood. An intensive five-day residential for writers seeking inspiration from oral tradition and storytellers seeking to deepen their knowledge of their chosen art. Shonaleigh is a drutsyla, a Jewish storyteller with a repertoire of over three thousand stories drawn from a centuries-old tradition. Simon Heywood is a teacher folklorist, writer, storyteller and composer of international acclaim. Together they building on

over twenty years’ experience, performing, teaching, researching and writing stories for audiences of all kinds. They teach : the discipline of creative thinking; the basics of voice and movement; word-music in sound and image; plot and pacing; key texts in stories and storytelling; the place of storytelling in the modern world.

Fri 23 – Thur 27 Dec. Halsway Manor Christmas House Party. Halsway is the perfect  place to spend Christmas.  There are carols around the magnificent Christmas tree, singing in the bar after the evening dances, workshops for music, singing, bellringing, craft and dancing.  There may be silly games in the afternoon after Christmas lunch, a harp recital, a Mummers play (even a pantomime if there’s time!) a Boxing Day walk and maybe a longsword workshop. All this and then Santa and his Elves come delivering presents........... It’s up to you how much or how little you do, but whatever you do, Pete and Marj Hendy are there to organise the weekend, and Peter and Moira Gutteridge are there to play the music.  All we need is your company.

Staying at Halsway Manor. Events advertised with Full Board include all accommodation and meals (breakfast, lunch and dinner, all freshly prepared by our chefs on the premises, please advise us of any dietary needs when you book). We have 27 bedrooms (singles, doubles, family rooms, 2 are disabled accessible), 19 have ensuite bathrooms, 8 have sinks in the rooms and toilets and showers close by. We also have camping facilities and pitches for camper vans. Some courses finish on Sunday afternoons and it is possible to stay overnight on the Sunday night for which there is an extra charge.
